can I make my own baby Wrap Carrier?

I’ve been looking into wrap style baby carriers, like the maya wrap, and I love them. I used the Baby Bjorn carrier a grand total of two times with my son because it was so bulky and I have a small torso, I couldn’t even see over it, and it was so uncomfortable. My son’s 9 months now and we want to try for another soon and I love the idea of being able to use the wrap for him now or a newborn later.
anyway, it seems to me that these styles of wraps are basically just a really long piece of jersey or some other type of fabric, and I’ve seen them cost as much as $89. There’s got to be a better way. I was hoping someone knew how to make these with the right length of fabric so they are safe and will not fray or tear. thank you!!
